What is a murmur?

When the doctor listens to a heart by a stethoscope he can always hear the sound of the heart valve closing. An additional noise is termed “a murmur”. Some murmurs are due to an abnormality of the heart valves, whereas others occur in children with normal hearts (then called a “benign” or an “innocent” murmur. According to the peculiarity of the murmur the doctor can prescribe a chest x-ray, an electrocardiogram, and an echocardiogram. Sometime to reach an accurate diagnosis can be useful a cardiac catheterisation.
