Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid, rapidly oxidized in the disulfides homocysteine and cysteine-homocysteine. Normal levels of fasting plasma homocysteine are considered to be between 5 and 15 μmol/L. several vitamins and diet regulate metabolic pathway and influence plasma concentration. Observations in several and clinical and epidemiological studies have suggested that elevated homocisteine is a risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease and venous thromboembolism.
