Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a supraventricular tachyarrhythmia characterized by uncoordinated atrial activation with consequent deterioration of atrial mechanical function, haemodynamic impairment and thromboembolic events. It means significant increasing of cardiac morbidity, mortality and cost. Its prevalence is increasing along with the age of the population. It is often associated with structural heart disease, but a fair part of patients have a no detectable heart disease.
